TONIGHT’S ASSIGNMENT
Begin work on Essay # 3
This will be an exercise in using an extended metaphor.
Harper Lee uses metaphors (or comparisons) throughout the book, including on p. 21 where she describes Miss Caroline, the teacher,
as being similar to a peppermint drop.
Hopefully you can learn some good lessons from the author
about using metaphors .
Remember: when you use an extended metaphor,
the metaphor should be gradually explained
throughout the paragraph.
Each chunk should add something to the metaphor,
so that when the reader arrives at the end of the paragraph,
he or she will have a complete understanding
of how the metaphor works.
Imagine, for instance, if Harper Lee
had used an entire paragraph
to fully explain why Miss Caroline
reminded Scout of a peppermint drop.
In this essay, your task
is to describe yourself
using an extended metaphor.
What you have to do is decide
on something you could compare yourself to --
something that would allow you to
use a full 11-sentence paragraph
to explain it.
Tonight, on your blog,
write the body paragraph.
